Phonics order explained: which sounds come first, and why

Almost every phonics program teaches sounds in a specific order, not the order they appear in the alphabet, and not at random. Here is the reasoning behind that order, in plain terms.

Why phonics order isn't just A to Z

The alphabet is a naming order, not a teaching order. A structured phonics program uses a different sequence on purpose.

A, B, C groups letters by their alphabetical name, which has nothing to do with how common a sound is in real words, or how easy it is for a young child to hear and say. A teaching order is built around a different question: which sounds let a child start building and decoding real words the fastest, with the fewest look-alike or sound-alike letters introduced too close together.

That's the general shape behind most systematic synthetic phonics programs: start with a small set of high-utility single sounds, use them to build the first real words as early as possible, then widen the set step by step, always circling back to what's already been taught rather than leaving it behind.

Exact sequences differ from one published program to another, but most systematic phonics teaching moves through a broadly similar set of stages:

  • A small set of common single-letter sounds first. Sounds like s, a, t, p and n are frequent, distinct from each other, and let a child sound out real short words almost immediately, which keeps early practice meaningful rather than abstract.
  • Look-alike and sound-alike letters kept apart. Letters that are easy to confuse visually, like b and d, or by sound, like m and n, are usually introduced with some distance between them rather than back to back, so one doesn't get muddled with the other while it's still new.
  • The rest of the single-letter sounds. Once a working set of early letters can already build words, the remaining single-letter sounds fill in, widening what a child can read and spell.
  • Consonant digraphs. Two letters making one new sound, such as sh, ch, th and ck, introduced only once the single letters behind them are already solid.
  • Consonant blends. Two or three consonant sounds said quickly together with each one still heard, such as st, bl or spl, layered on top of a secure single-letter and digraph base.
  • Vowel teams and less common patterns. Longer vowel sounds and trickier spelling patterns come later, once the foundation underneath them is solid enough to carry the extra complexity.

The throughline across all of it is the same idea: never introduce a new pattern that depends on something a child hasn't been taught yet. Each new step should be buildable entirely out of pieces already in place.

Why this matters when you're choosing a program or app

The specific order a program uses matters less than whether it has a genuine, planned order at all, and sticks to it consistently. A program that introduces sounds however a particular story or game happens to need them, rather than following a deliberate sequence, makes it hard for a parent to know what a child has actually been taught versus what they've only been exposed to in passing.

A useful, simple test: ask whether a program can tell you, at any point, exactly which sounds a child has covered so far and which come next. If the answer is a clear list rather than a shrug, there's a real sequence underneath it. If a story or a game uses words built from sounds a child hasn't met yet, that's a sign the content isn't following its own order closely.

A five-minute check for any program or app

You don't need to be a reading specialist to spot whether a program has a real teaching order behind it. A few quick things to look for:

  • Ask what comes next. A program with a genuine sequence can tell you exactly which sound or pattern a child will meet after the one they're on now. A vague answer, or "whatever the next story happens to use," is a sign the order is looser than it looks.
  • Read a decodable story closely. Every word in a properly sequenced decodable story should be buildable from sounds already taught up to that point. If a story suddenly uses a pattern that hasn't come up yet, the sequencing isn't being followed strictly.
  • Watch for letters that look or sound alike appearing back to back. b and d, or m and n, taught in the same short stretch, can be a sign the order wasn't built with that specific confusion in mind.
  • Check whether progress is tracked against the sequence. A program that can show you which sounds a specific child has and hasn't covered is treating the order as something real to measure against, not just a rough teaching philosophy in the background.

None of this requires taking a program's marketing claims at face value. A concrete, checkable sequence is one of the more reliable signs that "phonics-based" describes the actual content, not just the label on the app store listing.
