What Is Synthetic Phonics, and How Do Apps Teach It?

"Synthetic phonics" turns up on curriculum pages, school newsletters and app store listings, usually without ever being defined. Here's the plain version, and what it actually looks like when a reading app is built around it.

Synthetic phonics, defined simply

"Synthetic" here doesn't mean artificial. It means synthesis, building something up from its parts.

A child taught with synthetic phonics learns individual letter sounds first, "s", "a", "t", and so on, and is then taught to blend them left to right to build a whole word: s-a-t becomes "sat". New sounds, including digraphs like "sh" and "ch" where two letters make one sound, are introduced in a fixed, deliberate order, and each one gets practised in real words before the next one arrives.

The word "decodable" comes from this same idea. A decodable text is one built entirely from sounds a child has already been taught, so sounding it out is always genuinely possible rather than a guess dressed up as reading. That's different from an approach that leans on a child memorising a word's shape as a whole, or guessing from a picture; synthetic phonics asks a child to actually decode the letters in front of them, every time.

A worked example, sound by sound

It's easier to see than to describe, so here's one word walked through slowly.

Take the word "ship". A child who already knows the sounds "sh", "i" and "p" sees the letters s-h-i-p, first identifies that "sh" is a digraph, two letters making one sound, rather than trying to sound "s" and "h" separately. They say each sound in turn, "sh", "i", "p", and then blend them together faster and faster until the separate sounds fuse into the word "ship". Nothing about that process depends on the child having seen the word "ship" before; the same three sounds, blended the same way, would work for "shin" or "shop" too.

That's the whole mechanism, repeated across thousands of words as more sounds get taught. It's also why a decodable text matters so much in practice: a story that uses "ship" before a child has met the "sh" digraph is quietly asking them to guess, not decode, which undoes the point of teaching the method in the first place.

Not every English word is fully regular, of course. A small set of common words, often called "tricky" or "common exception" words, don't follow the rules cleanly ( "the" and "said" are typical examples) and are usually taught by sight alongside the phonics sequence, not instead of it.

Why it's the default in most English reading curricula

English spelling is famously inconsistent, but the sound system underneath it is far more regular than it looks once it's taught explicitly and in order. That regularity is exactly what a systematic, sounds-first method is built to exploit, and it's a large part of why synthetic phonics has become the standard recommendation in most national curricula and reading programmes.

Exact requirements vary by country and change over time, so treat any specific rule you've heard about as worth confirming with the relevant education authority rather than taking on faith from any single website, including this one.

The theory is simple; building it into software honestly is the harder part. A few things separate an app that genuinely teaches synthetic phonics from one that just uses the phrase in its marketing:
